5 Tips to Make Healthy Food Tasty

| By Jamie Rametta |

People know they should eat healthy.

But there are many reasons it may not happen despite good intentions.

For one, they think it won’t taste good. But nutritious food can — and should — taste delicious. We should make an effort to make our nutritious food enjoyable in order to make the change last.

So how can we make nutrient-rich food taste oh-so-good? Try these 5 tips to jump-start your taste-bud journey:

1. Roast vegetables: Try roasting potato slices, asparagus, cauliflower, eggplant, onions, bell peppers, and/or summer squash in the oven at 375 degrees F with olive oil, dried herbs (such as oregano), salt and pepper for about 25-45 minutes depending on the vegetable and size of the pieces.

2. Use olive oil (OO) and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO): Try drizzling a little EVOO over your scrambled eggs with whole grain toast; make a dipping oil for bread with EVOO, herbs, salt and pepper; and use OO in cooking to make those lean proteins (like chicken and turkey breast or fish) moist.

3. Experiment with fresh herbs: Explore using fresh chives on a baked potato with Greek yogurt and reduced-fat shredded cheese; add fresh cilantro on top of shrimp tacos; or sprinkle ribbons of fresh basil on top of a cooked homemade veggie, whole-grain pizza.

4. Be adventurous: Try sesame oil over brown rice; use chocolate hummus as a substitute for icing on cake; buy a purple sweet potato.

5. Use condiments and toppings to add a pop of flavor: Add a few dark chocolate chips to whole grain pancakes; use a little ketchup to bring out the flavor in those homemade, roasted “fries”; spread guacamole on that turkey burger to make it moister; add a sprinkle of hot sauce to your bean taco to make it fiery; or sprinkle cinnamon on your cottage cheese with fruit to make the flavors meld.

Just remember, have fun and be creative. There’s no one right answer to cooking.
